ABSTRACT: Seasonal variations and production factors can influence the quality of grapes. Considering the Sub-middle region of the São Francisco Valley, Brazil, differentiated by production in rainy and warmer periods of the year, the climatic conditions in each season affect the duration of the phenological phases and quality of the grapes. The objective of this study was to characterize the changes in the quality components during maturation of ‘BRS Magna’ grapes on different rootstocks, in rainy seasons under tropical conditions, as a support to define the harvest time. The experiment was conducted in Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil, from Jan to Apr 2017 (cycle 1) and Dec 2017 to Apr 2018 (cycle 2) evaluating rootstocks and age of the fruits. Bunches were picked from the start of maturation to the harvest: 49, 56, 61, 64 and 68 days after fruit set (DAF) for cycle 1, and 35, 41, 48, 55, 61, and 66 DAF for cycle 2. In cycle 1 ‘IAC 572’ and ‘Paulsen 1103’ rootstocks provided higher sugar contents in grapes, which was only repeated in cycle 2 for ‘Paulsen 1103’. The accumulation of anthocyanins and yellow flavonoids was favored by ‘IAC 313’ and ‘IAC 572’ rootstocks in cycle 1, and by ‘IAC 313’ and ‘IAC 766’ in cycle 2. A higher content of polyphenols was conferred on ‘IAC 572’ in cycle 1 and on ‘IAC 766’ in cycle 2, which also had a greater antioxidant capacity. Although there were differences between rootstocks, harvesting at approximately 64 DAF maximized grape quality for all treatments.

ABSTRACT. Environmental and production factors might affect grapevine physiology. Estimating these effects is essential for planning the harvest and predicting the quality of grapes. The aim of this study was to characterize the quality and antioxidant potential of ‘BRS Cora’ grapes with different training systems and rootstocks in production cycles of the second half of the year under tropical conditions. The experimental design was randomized blocks with sub-subdivided plots over time. Three training systems and two rootstocks were studied in production cycles referring to the second halves of 2017 and 2018. In 2017, the grapes of plants trained with lyre and vertical shoot positioning (VSP) had the highest soluble solids and sugars contents, and in 2018, this response occurred with the overhead trellis system. There was lower variation in titratable acidity between cycles of grapevines trained with VSP and lyre, as well as in those grafted onto ‘IAC 572’. In 2018, lyre with ‘IAC 572’ promoted higher pigment accumulation. Climatic conditions in 2017 provided a higher accumulation of polyphenols and antioxidant activity in grapes of plants trained with lyre with ‘IAC 766’. The efficiency of the training system within each cycle, associated with the effect of the rootstock, resulted in differentiated responses according to climatic conditions.

ABSTRACT The quality and phenolic compound composition might be affected by production system due to microclimate around the bunches and sunlight interception provided by vegetative canopy architecture and environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to characterize the quality and antioxidant potential of ‘BRS Cora’ grapes with different trellis systems and rootstocks in rainy seasons under tropical conditions. Three trellis systems and two rootstocks were studied in production cycles during the first halves of 2017 and 2018, using a randomized-block experimental design. Interactions between the trellis systems,rootstocks and cycles differentially affect the fruit quality. The association between vertical shoot positioning or an overhead trellis with ‘IAC 766’ induced higher polyphenol compound contents. In turn, the trellis systems overhead trellis and lyre provided greater stability for the berry weight, soluble solids, total soluble sugar contents, yellow flavonoids, total extractable polyphenol compounds or antioxidant activity in both production cycles. The results of this study inferred that the grape quality and phenolic compound composition were not only affected by some specific climatic factors but also by the trellis system, rootstock, and the interaction between the three factors.

Abstract The new table grape cultivar BRS Tainá produces white firm seedless grapes, agreeable flavor, balanced sugar-acid ratio, good berry adherence to the pedicel and yield of 50 ton ha-1 year-1. It is recommended for the tropical conditions of the Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. Propagative material is acquired from nurseries licensed by Embrapa.

Abstract The increasing use of natural biodegradable polymers to preserve foods is a consequence of the concern of society with sustainability. Starch stands out amongst the natural polymers due to its great availability on a worldwide scale, high extraction yield and nutritional value, low cost, biodegradability and biocompatibility. Apart from the traditional sources, various others exist with extraction potential. The objective of this study was to identify films from different non-traditional starch sources with properties revealing their potential to be applied as coating for fruits and vegetables. The biodegradable films were prepared with three starch concentrations (2, 3 and 3.5%) for each of the following sources: cassava, yam, jackfruit seed and mango kernel. The starches from the sources studied are promising ingredients for the formulation of films, presenting good physical, optical (such as transparency) and mechanical characteristics, principally tensile strength whose maximum value was 36.63 MPa. Increases in starch concentration directly influenced the thickness, water vapor permeability, tensile strength and puncture force. The films with the greatest potentials for use according to their characteristics were 3% cassava, 3% yam, 3.5% jackfruit seed and 2% mango.

RESUMO O umbuzeiro e umbu-cajazeira demandam informações sobre as características de acessos potenciais para implantação comercial e preservação. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o teor foliar e ciclagem dos nutrientes de 15 acessos de umbuzeiro e um de umbucajazeira. Os tratamentos constaram de 16 acessos: BGU -44, BGU-45, BGU-47, BGU-48, BGU-50, BGU-75, EPAMIG-01, EPAMIG-03, EPAMIG-04, EPAMIG-05, EPAMIG-06, EPAMIG-07, EPAMIG-09, EPAMIG-13, umbuzeiro de origem desconhecida e umbu-cajazeira Princesa. Adotou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com três repetições, constituídas de uma planta cada. Foram mensurados os teores de nutrientes nas folhas, nas fases de emissão de fluxo foliar e senescência das folhas, nas safras de 2015/2016 e 2016/2017, e determinou-se a taxa de retranslocação de N, P, K e Mg. Verificou-se que os acessos denotaram teores médios de nutrientes na folha de 28,6; 27,6; 9,5; 4,20; 2,5 e 2,0 g kg-1 com ordem decrescente N>Ca>K>Mg>S>P, respectivamente, e 103,61; 86,22; 82,12; 60,2; 16,0 e 3,52 mg kg-1 de Fe>B>Na>Mn>Zn>Cu, respectivamente. O acesso BGU-48 revelou maior eficiência de retranslocação de N e P nas folhas e o BGU-50 expressou eficiência de reciclagem para K e Mg. A ordem das taxas de retranslocação é K>P>N>Mg sendo maior na safra 2015/2016.

ABSTRACT Information is needed on the characteristics of potential accessions of Spondias tuberosa Arruda Câmara (umbu) and Spondias sp.(umbu-caja) for commercial planting and preservation. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the leaf contents and cycling of nutrients of 15 accessions of umbu and one of umbu -caja. The treatments consisted of 16 accessions: BGU-44, BGU-45, BGU-47, BGU-48, BGU-50, BGU-75, EPAMIG-01, EPAMIG-03, EPAMIG-04, EPAMIG-05, EPAMIG-06, EPAMIG-07, EPAMIG-09, EPAMIG-13, umbu of unknown origin and the umbu-caja Princesa. A completely randomized experimental design was adopted, with three replicates, consisting of one plant each. Nutrient contents in the leaves were measured in the leaf flushing and leaf senescence phases in the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons, and the N, P, K and Mg retranslocation rates were determined. The accessions showed average leaf nutrient contents of 28.6, 27.6, 9.5, 4.20, 2.5 and 2.0 g kg-1 with the descending order N>Ca>K>Mg>S>P, respectively, and 103.61, 86.22, 82.12, 60.2, 16.0 and 3.52 mg kg-1 of Fe>B>Na>Mn>Zn>Cu, respectively. The accession BGU-48 had higher N and P retranslocation efficiency in the leaves and BGU-50 showed recycling efficiency for K and Mg. The order of retranslocation rates is K>P>N>Mg, being higher in the 2015/2016 season.

RESUMO Inhame, mandioca, semente de jaca e amêndoa da manga têm potencial para extração de amido e utilização na indústria alimentícia ou para formulação de revestimentos biodegradáveis. Como revestimento, o amido pode ser aplicado em frutas de maturação rápida, como manga, que requer tecnologias para incrementar sua vida útil. O objetivo desse trabalho foi caracterizar o amido de fontes não tradicionais e avaliar o potencial como revestimento em manga ‘Palmer’. Os amidos foram extraídos de mandioca, amêndoa de manga, semente de jaca e inhame, tendo sido caracterizados para propriedades físicas, ópticas e químicas, para posterior uso como revestimentos em manga ‘Palmer’. Os revestimentos utilizados foram amido de mandioca a 3%; de semente de jaca a 3,5%; de amêndoa de manga a 3,5% e de inhame a 3,5%, que foram comparados ao controle (sem revestimento). Os frutos foram armazenados a 24,4 ± 0,3 °C e 87 ± 2% de UR e avaliados por até 12 dias. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em fatorial 5x7. O teor de amido total foi superior a 70% nas quatro fontes. Os amidos de semente de jaca e de inhame apresentaram maior teor de amilose. Os amidos das quatro fontes apresentaram baixa solubilidade em água e poder de inchamento, destacando-se o de semente de jaca. Os revestimentos mantiveram a qualidade dos frutos, destacando-se o amido de amêndoa de manga por reduzir a respiração e a perda de massa em 27,7% e 33,8%, respectivamente, bem como o da semente de jaca que também atrasou o amarelecimento da casca.

ABSTRACT Yam, cassava, jackfruit seed and mango seed kernel have potential for the extraction and use as starch in the food industry of starch or for the formulation of biodegradable coatings. As a biodegradable coating, starch can be applied in fruits characterized by a fast maturation, such as mango, which requires technologies to increase its shelf life. The aim of this study was to characterize starch from four non-traditional sources and to evaluate their potential as coating for ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Starches used were extracted from cassava, mango seed kernel, jackfruit seed, and yam, and had their physical, optical, and chemical properties characterized for later use as coatings of ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Fruits were coated with 3% cassava starch, 3.5% jackfruit seed starch, 3.5% mango seed kernel starch and 3.5% yam starch, and were compared to the control (uncoated). They were then stored at 24.4 ± 0.3 °C and 87 ± 2% RH and evaluated for 12 days. A 5x7 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized experimental design was adopted. Total starch content was higher than 70% in the four sources of starch. Starches from jackfruit and yam had higher amylose content. The four sources of starch had low water solubility and swelling power, with jackfruit seed starch having the highest values. The coating sources were effective in maintaining quality, particularly mango seed kernel starch because it reduced respiratory rate and weight loss in 27.7% and 33.8%, respectively, as well as jackfruit seed starch as it delayed fruit skin yellowing.

RESUMO A videira ‘BRS Magna’ tem como vantagens a adaptação a diferentes regiões brasileiras e a elaboração de suco de qualidade. Entretanto, requer a definição de componentes do sistema de cultivo, como porta-enxerto, para cada região. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar a composição química e o potencial antioxidante de sucos de uvas colhidas de videiras ‘BRS Magna’ cultivadas sobre diferentes porta-enxertos, nas condições tropicais do Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. As uvas foram colhidas no Campo Experimental de Bebedouro/Embrapa Semiárido, em Petrolina-PE, Brasil. Os tratamentos corresponderam aos porta-enxertos ‘IAC 766’, ‘IAC 572’, ‘IAC 313’, ‘Freedom’, ‘Paulsen 1103’, ‘Harmony’ e ‘SO4’. Foram elaborados os sucos de uvas de duas safras, para avaliação após o armazenamento. Para cada safra, adotou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. A qualidade dos sucos variou com os tratamentos, em cada duração do armazenamento. Aos nove meses, os sucos da primeira safra apresentaram perda de pigmentos e de compostos fenólicos, sendo que aquele elaborado com uvas de plantas enxertadas sobre ‘Harmony’ distinguiu-se pelos teores de sólidos solúveis (SS), intensidade de cor (IC), antocianinas, índice de polifenois totais (IPT) e capacidade antioxidante. Os sucos da segunda safra, aos quatro meses, caracterizaram-se por maiores teores de alguns compostos, destacando-se o tratamento ‘SO4’ pelos SS, IC, polifenóis extraíveis totais, IPT e capacidade antioxidante. Os porta-enxertos menos vigorosos conferiram melhor qualidade ao suco, desde que se considere o potencial de armazenamento e o processo de elaboração.

ABSTRACT The ‘BRS Magna’ grapevine has the advantage of adapting to different regions of Brazil and producing juice of good quality. However, it is necessary to define the components of the cropping system, such as the rootstock, for each region. The aim of this study was to characterise the chemical composition and antioxidant capacity of grape juice collected from ‘BRS Magna’ grapevines grown on different rootstock under the tropical conditions of the Sub-middle São Francisco Valley. The grapes were harvested in the Experimental Area of Bebedouro/Embrapa Semiárido, in Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil. The treatments corresponded to the ‘IAC 766’, ‘IAC 572’, ‘IAC 313’, ‘Freedom’, ‘Paulsen 1103’, ‘Harmony’ and ‘SO4’ rootstock. The grape juice was prepared from two harvests for evaluation after storage. For each harvest, a randomised block design was used, with four replications. The quality of the juice varied with the treatment in each storage period. At nine months, the juice from the first harvest showed a loss of pigment and phenolic compounds, while the juice made with grapes from plants grafted onto ‘Harmony’ stood out for soluble solids content (SS), colour intensity (CI), anthocyanins, total polyphenol index (TPI) and antioxidant capacity. Juice from the second harvest was characterised at four months by higher levels of various compounds, especially the ‘SO4’ treatment for SS, CI, total extractable polyphenols, TPI and antioxidant capacity. Considering storage potential and the preparation process, the less-vigorous rootstock resulted in better quality juice.

ABSTRACT: The biosynthesis of phenolic compounds might be influenced by environmental factors, such as solar radiation, temperature and relative air humidity, and production system. Some components of the production system, particularly the trellis system and rootstock, might change the phenolic composition of grapes due to microclimate of the cultivation region. In this study, the phenolic profile of ‘Chenin Blanc’ grapes was characterized with different trellis systems and rootstocks in two consecutive production cycles by using high-performance liquid chromatography under tropical semi-arid conditions. In the second production cycle (Jan-May/2016), accumulation of (-) - epicatechin gallate and (-) - epigallocatechin gallate was higher when vigorous rootstocks were trellised to the lyre system, whereas the lyre system associated to rootstock ‘SO4’ resulted in higher rutin accumulation in the same cycle. There was little influence of the factors studied on trans-resveratrol and piceatannol accumulation. However, a higher accumulation of piceatannol was observed in the second productive cycle compared to cis-resveratrol and trans-resveratrol. This study highlights that accumulation of phenolic compounds is influenced not only by environmental factors typical of the production year season, but also by the trellis system and rootstock adopted. The identification of phenolic compounds in the accumulation stimulated by the combination of trellis system, rootstock, and production season allows to differentiate grape quality and add value to products derived from such combination in a tropical semi-arid region.

RESUMO Cultivares de uvas de mesa sem sementes têm sido avaliadas no Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. Para esta região, é importante identificar cultivares com potencial produtivo, qualidade e manejo com menor exigência por insumos e mão-de-obra, comparadas às comercialmente adotadas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a influência de diferentes porta-enxertos sobre a qualidade e o potencial antioxidante das cultivares de uva de mesa BRS Clara e Arizul, em dois ciclos de produção, no Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. A área de estudo foi instalada no Campo Experimental de Bebedouro/Embrapa Semiárido, em Petrolina-PE. As cultivares foram avaliadas em experimentos separados, tendo como tratamentos os porta-enxertos IAC 313, IAC 572, IAC 766, SO4, Paulsen 1103 e Harmony e dois ciclos de produção, correspondentes a outubro/2016-fevereiro/2017 e março-junho/2017. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, em fatorial 2 (ciclo de produção) x 6 (porta-enxerto), com três repetições. As condições mais favoráveis à qualidade da uva ‘BRS Clara’, evidenciado por maior massa da baga, diminuição da relação sólidos solúveis/acidez titulável (SS/AT) e maior atividade antioxidante, foram observadas na safra março-junho/2017, com destaque para as procedentes de plantas enxertadas sobre IAC 572, SO4 e Harmony. A cultivar ‘Arizul’ também se caracterizou por melhor qualidade na safra março-julho de 207, demonstrada por maior massa da baga, menor acidez e relação SS/AT e melhor coloração, principalmente para os porta-enxertos SO4 e Harmony. Portanto, um porta-enxerto adequado potencializa atributos de qualidade nas uvas.

ABSTRACT Seedless table grapes cultivars have been studied in the Sub-middle region of São Francisco Valley at northeast Brazil. For that region, it is important to identify cultivars with productive potential, better quality and efficiency, minimizing the expenses in terms of inputs and workforce, when compared to traditional cultivars. Specifically, the objective of this study was to determine the influence of different rootstocks on the quality and on the antioxidant potential of BRS Clara and Arizul table grapes cultivars of two production cycles. The experimental area belongs to the Experimental Field of Bebedouro/Embrapa Semiárido, located in the sub-middle region of São Francisco Valley, in Petrolina - PE, northeast Brazil. Both BRS Clara and Arizul cultivars were analyzed individually using IAC 313, IAC 572, IAC 766, SO4, Paulsen 1103 and Harmony rootstocks, during production cycles from October/2016 to February/2017 and from March/2007 to June/2017. The experimental design was planned in randomized blocks, in a 2 (production cycle) x 6 (rootstock) factorial, with three replications each. More favorable conditions to quality for ‘BRS Clara’ grapes, as evidenced by higher berry mass, lower soluble solids (SS)/titratable acidity (TA) ratio and higher antioxidant activity, were observed after the March-June, 2017 harvest, especially from scions grafted onto IAC 572, SO4 and Harmony. The Arizul cultivar was characterized by better quality after the March-July, 2017 harvest, showing higher berry mass, lower acidity and lower SS/TA ratio and a better color mainly in SO4 and Harmony rootstocks. Therefore, an appropriate rootstock enhances the quality of the grapes.

RESUMO O Submédio do Vale do São Francisco é reconhecido pela particularidade das condições de produção de uvas para diferentes usos. A produção de uvas para suco nesta região é relativamente recente. Por isso, o conhecimento acerca dos componentes do sistema produtivo ainda é limitado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a qualidade e a atividade antioxidante da uva ‘BRS Magna’ sob influência de sistemas de condução e porta-enxertos, em ciclos produtivos do primeiro semestre do ano, em cultivo irrigado no Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. O experimento foi conduzido no Campo Experimental de Bebedouro/Embrapa Semiárido, em Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brasil. Foram estudados os sistemas de condução latada, lira e espaldeira e os porta-enxertos ‘IAC 572’ e ‘IAC 766’, nos ciclos produtivos correspondentes ao primeiro semestre dos anos de 2017 e 2018. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso em parcelas subsubdivididas no tempo com quatro repetições. No geral, as respostas foram dependentes do sistema de condução, porta-enxerto e ciclo de produção, que determinaram características específicas às uvas. A produção no primeiro semestre de 2018 caracterizou-se por elevados teores de antocianinas e de polifenóis extraíveis totais e atividade antioxidante superior, sendo as respostas diferenciadas conforme o sistema de condução e o porta-enxerto. Plantas conduzidas em latada e enxertadas sobre ‘IAC 572’ tiveram maior acúmulo de polifenóis extraíveis totais e atividade antioxidante nas bagas. Sob espaldeira, foram observados incrementos nos teores de açúcares, flavonoides amarelos e antocianinas das bagas enquanto o sistema lira promoveu maior massa dos cachos.

ABSTRACT The Submedium São Francisco Valley is renowned for its particular conditions for cultivating grapes for different uses. The production of grapes for juice is relatively recent, and thus, knowledge is still limited on components of the production system. The aim of this study was to characterize the quality and antioxidant activity of ‘BRS Magna’ grapes in irrigated crops of the Submedium São Francisco River Valley under the influence of training systems and rootstocks, in production cycles of the first half of the year. The experiment was conducted in the Experimental Field of Bebedouro/Embrapa Semiárido, in Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil. The following were studied: overhead trellis, lyre, and vertical shoot positioning (VSP) systems and rootstocks ‘IAC 572’ and ‘IAC 766’, in the production cycles corresponding to the first halves of 2017 and 2018. Experimental design was in randomized blocks, with sub-subplots through time and four replicates. Overall, responses depended on training systems, rootstocks, and production cycles, which determined specific traits of the grapes. Production in the first half of 2018 was characterized by high anthocyanin contents, high total extractable polyphenols, and higher antioxidant activity, and responses were differentiated according to training system and rootstock. Plants trained to overhead trellis and grafted on ‘IAC 572’ had higher accumulation of total extractable polyphenols and antioxidant activity in berries. Plants trained to VSP had increased sugar, yellow flavonoid, and anthocyanin contents in berries while lyre training system led to higher bunch mass.

Abstract The recovery of agroindustry byproducts can bring opportunities for the development of new products. The objective of this study was to characterize chemical compounds contents in the byproducts generated during winemaking from different grape varieties cultivated in Vale do São Francisco, Brazil. The grapes and their byproducts (skins and seeds) from four wineries (w1, w2, w3 and w4) were evaluated. The varieties studied were: Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Moscato Canelli, Italia, Arinto+Fernão Pires, Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc, used in the processing of white/sparkling wines, and also Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet, used in the processing of red wines. High ascorbic acid contents were found in the skin and seed byproducts, the latter also presenting high protein and pectin contents. The skin byproduct obtained in the process of elaborating white/sparkling wines from ‘Tempranillo’ grapes presented relatively higher ascorbic acid, pectin and protein contents. In the elaboration of red wines by w1, the ‘Syrah’ skin byproduct showed high ascorbic acid, soluble solids, sugars and protein contents. The seed byproduct from the ‘Syrah’ grapes used to elaborate red wines by w1 showed a more favorable composition for reuse, as did those of red wines of ‘Tempranillo’ grapes from w3.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar os teores de compostos bioativos e a atividade antioxidante dos frutos de cultivares comerciais de mangueira, aceroleira, goiabeira, atemoieira e pinheira produzidas no Submédio do Vale do São Francisco, com vistas à agregação de valor por meio de suas propriedades funcionais. Frutos colhidos em áreas comerciais da região foram avaliados quanto aos teores de ácido ascórbico, antocianinas totais, flavonoides amarelos, carotenoides totais, polifenóis extraíveis totais e atividade antioxidante total, pelos métodos ABTS e ORAC. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística descritiva. Todas as frutas avaliadas apresentaram teores de compostos bioativos e atividade antioxidante, com destaque para as acerolas, em particular as cultivares Sertaneja e Okinawa, podendo ser consideradas como excelente fonte de antioxidantes naturais e ter o seu consumo incentivado, como parte de uma dieta saudável. A correlação positiva e significativa encontrada entre a atividade antioxidante e os teores de ácido ascórbico, antocianinas, flavonoides amarelos, carotenoides e polifenóis extraíveis totais, nos dois métodos empregados, indica que nos frutos avaliados, essa atividade foi influenciada pelo conjunto de compostos bioativos determinados.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity in fruit of commercial cultivars of mango, acerola, guava, atemoya and custard apple produced in the lower-middle São Francisco Valley, with a view to adding value to the product because of their functional properties. Fruits harvested in commercial areas of the region were evaluated for levels of ascorbic acid, total anthocyanins, yellow flavonoids, total carotenoids and total extractable polyphenols, and for total antioxidant activity, using the ABTS and ORAC methods. The data were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. All the fruits under evaluation presented levels of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity, especially the acerola, and in particular the Sertaneja and Okinawa cultivars, which may be considered excellent sources of natural antioxidants, with their consumption encouraged as part of a healthy diet. The significant positive correlation found between antioxidant activity and the levels of ascorbic acid, anthocyanins, yellow flavonoids, carotenoids and total extractable polyphenols with the two methods employed, shows that for the fruits under evaluation, this activity was influenced by the determined set of bioactive compounds.

Abstract The potential use of byproducts from fruit processing has been evaluated in order to propose new uses as well as reducing costs and environmental impact. Most of the studies are focused on byproducts from primary transformation. However, byproducts from secondary transformation can reserve similar reuse opportunities. The aim of this study was to characterize chemical composition and antioxidant capacity that remained on byproducts from fruit processing at the pulp refinement stage. The byproducts from pulp refining were evaluated in cashew, cocoa, cupuassu, genipap, papaya, passion fruit seed, plum, soursop (pulp and seeds), strawberry, tamarind (pulp and seeds), umbu and yellow mombin fruits. Water activity, acidity, pH, soluble solids, sugars, starch, pectins, ascorbic acid, carotenoids and polyphenols, and the antioxidant activity were analyzed. The byproducts from the refinement of soursop related to the fibrous pulp showed the highest soluble solids and pectic compounds content, while the seeds byproducts constituted a source of starch. The byproducts from the refining of pulp from yellow mombin and papaya were sources of carotenoids. The highest starch and polyphenols contents, as well as antioxidant activities peak on the refining of byproducts of tamarind. The byproducts studied maintained chemical compounds and bioactive components that hold potential reuse.

RESUMO Dois experimentos foram conduzidos em Petrolina PE, com o objetivo de avaliar o comportamento produtivo de cultivares de minitomate, nas condições do Submédio do Vale do São Francisco. O primeiro, entre agosto e dezembro de 2012 (segundo semestre), e o segundo, entre março e julho de 2013 (primeiro semestre). Para as duas épocas, foram avaliados seis cultivares de minitomate: E5663; Kada; F1170; Tanzimech; E1275 e Abirú. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições dispostas em parcelas subdivididas, testando-se nas parcelas as duas épocas de cultivo e nas subparcelas, os genótipos. Avaliou-se produtividade total e comercial de frutos, teor de sólidos solúveis, número de frutos por planta, massa fresca de frutos por planta e massa fresca de fruto. A produtividade total, independentemente do genótipo, no cultivo de primeiro semestre foi superior. No cultivo de segundo semestre, a cultivar E5663 apresentou produtividade de 40,3 Mg ha-1. No primeiro semestre, com esse mesmo genótipo, obteve-se produtividade de 104,0 Mg ha-1. A produtividade comercial, o teor de sólidos solúveis e a produção por planta seguiram a mesma tendência. Quanto ao número de frutos por planta, foi verificada uma variação de 390,8 a 941,4 e 80,5 a 315,4 frutos por planta, para o primeiro semestre e segundo semestre, respectivamente. O genótipo E5663, por ter apresentado as melhores respostas produtivas e teor de sólidos solúveis, pode ser indicado para as condições de Petrolina-PE, ressaltando-se que este pode ser adotado nos dois períodos de cultivo do ano.

ABSTRACT Two experiments were conducted in Petrolina, State of Pernambuco (PE), Brazil, in order to evaluate the performance of mini tomato cultivars under the conditions of the Sub-Mid São Francisco Valley. One on crops of the second half of the year (SH) from August to December 2012, and other on crops of the first half of the year (FH) from March to July 2013. Six mini tomato cultivars were evaluated in both seasons: E5663, Kada, F1170, Tanzimech, E1275 and Abirú. A randomized block experimental design was used, with four replications, arranged in split plot, with the growing seasons in the plots and cultivars in the subplots. The total and commercial fruit yield, soluble solid contents, fruit yield per plant, number of fruits per plant, and fruit fresh weight were evaluated. The total yield was higher in the FH, regardless of the cultivar used. The cultivar E5663 presented yield of 40.3 Mg ha-1 in the SH and 104.0 Mg ha-1 in the FH. Commercial yield, soluble solid content and yield per plant followed the same trend. The number of fruits per plant ranged from 390.8 to 941.4 (FH) and from 80.5 to 315.4 (SH). The cultivar E5663 presented the best yield and soluble solid content responses, thus, it may be recommended for the conditions of Petrolina PE, and can be adopted for planting in both seasons evaluated.
